    NEPSE Records Double-Digit Gain, Led by Non-Life Insurance Sector – March 7, 2024


    The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) witnessed a notable increase of 13.51 points, equivalent to 0.67%, closing at 2,030.55 points compared to the previous day. This gain followed a positive trend from the previous trading session, where the index experienced an increase of 9.33 points.

    The trading day commenced with the NEPSE index opening at 2,020.95, reaching an intraday low of 2,017.00, and achieving an intraday high of 2,040.90.

    Throughout today’s trading activities, a total of 309 different stocks were traded in 47,699 transactions. The volume of shares traded amounted to 8,929,152, with a total turnover of Rs. 3.19 Arba. The market capitalization stood at Rs. 31.91 Kharba, and the float market capitalization was Rs. 10.90 Kharba.

    Nepal Reinsurance Company Limited Promoter Share (NRICP) took the lead in turnover, reaching Rs. 56.20 crores.

    Among the gainers in today’s trading, Peoples Hydropower Company Limited (PHCL) exhibited the highest increase of 10%, followed by Chirkhwa Hydropower Limited (CKHL) with a gain of 8.97%.

    Conversely, NIC ASIA Growth Fund-2 (NICGF2) faced the highest loss of 6.21%, trailed by Samling Power Company Limited (SPC) with a loss of 5.02%.

    In the sector indices, three sectors closed in the red today. The “Non-Life Insurance Index” recorded the highest gain of 1.56%, while the “Mutual Fund Index” experienced a loss of 0.79%.

    In the initial three months of the fiscal year 2080/81, concluding at the end of Ashwin, the non-life insurance sector in Nepal achieved remarkable success by accumulating a substantial premium of Rs. 10.44 Arba. This impressive growth is outlined in a recent comprehensive report released by the Nepal Insurance Authority. The robust performance of the insurance industry was fueled by a total of 6.81 lakh active insurance policies, collectively held by policyholders across a diverse range of segments.

    Siddhartha Premier Insurance emerged as a prominent leader in this sector, boasting an impressive count of 79,696 active policies. Following closely, Neco Insurance secured a commendable position with 75,916 active policies in force. In contrast, National Insurance exhibited a more modest presence with 9,731 active insurance policies.

    In terms of the total charges generated through insurance, Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance established itself as a front-runner, accumulating insurance charges amounting to Rs. 1.31 Arba. Siddhartha Premier Insurance, while not leading in terms of charges, maintained a substantial presence with total charges reaching Rs. 1.06 Arba. Shikhar Insurance Limited also made a substantial contribution, recording insurance charges of Rs. 1.04 Arba.

    In the first eleven months of the fiscal year 2079/80, non-life insurance companies in Nepal collected an impressive amount of Rs. 36.19 Arba in premiums from 25.37 lakh active insurance policies. According to a report from the Nepal Insurance Authority, Siddhartha Premier Insurance holds the most active policies at 313,602, followed by Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance with 305,633 policies. On the other hand, National Insurance Co. Ltd has the fewest active policies, with only 30,563 in total.

However, these companies have cautioned the government that they will stop issuing policies if the subsidy amount is not paid within the specified timeframe, according to a media statement.

    On the 10th of Chaitra 2078, the Nepal Insurance Authority directed that life insurance businesses have a minimum paid-up capital of Rs. 5 Arba. The Insurance Board also encouraged non-life insurance companies to increase their paid-up capital to Rs. 2.5 Arba by the end of Chaitra 2079.
