Due to damage caused by recent floods, the government has raised doubts about restarting the ambitious Melamchi Water Supply Project.
According to Water Supply Secretary Pramila Devi Bajracharya, the flood in mid-June caused a loss of Rs 2 billion, and the ongoing storm this weekend has further harmed the project.
The secretary told a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Development and Technology Committee on Monday that the floods entirely buried the project’s headworks area.
According to Bajracharya, experts have cautioned that the project’s future could be jeopardised due to the project’s susceptible geological situation upstream.
Meanwhile, the government has requested that the Asian Development Bank, the project’s finance partner, do a review on the project’s current state.
