India Allocates 5G Spectrum To Major Telcos For Trial


The Department of Telecom (DoT) in India has assigned 5G spectrum to select telecom carriers, opening the door for the long-awaited 5G trials.

According to the Times of India, 5G testing will be held in places such as Bengaluru, New Delhi, Gujarat, and Hyderabad.

According to reports, India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has assigned spectrum in the 700 MHz range, 3.3-3.6 GHz band, and 24.25-28.5 GHz band across trial locations. The trials will take about six months. In India, the frequency bands for 2G, 3G, and 4G are as follows.

β€œAfter the trial, all of the resulting data is turned in to the government, and the spectrum auction will begin.” S P Kochhar, Director General of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), told Indian media outlets.

On May 4th, India’s Department of Telecommunications authorized 5G testing applications from several telecoms including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, MTNL, and others.

Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and C-DOT will all contribute to the development of 5G communication infrastructure in India. However, Reliance Infocomm has stated that the testing will be conducted using its own indigenous 5G technology.

Due to escalating political tensions, India has omitted Chinese companies from its 5G equipment purchase.

During the testing, 5G applications will be used in a variety of industries. The Indian government will assess 5G’s potential in telemedicine, teleeducation, and drone-based agriculture monitoring, among other applications. Carrier networks will also put various 5G-enabled devices through their paces on their networks.

The Department of Telecom of India has indicated in its clearance letter to telecom operators that each telco must test its 5G network in both urban and rural settings. This approach underscores India’s desire to distribute the benefits of 5G throughout the country, rather than only in cities.

The universal penetration of 5G would reduce the discrepancy in broadband distribution and contribute to bridging India’s digital divide, which has been large. It will hasten the decentralization of broadband connectivity throughout the country, regardless of geography or commercial feasibility.

According to India’s Department of Telecommunications, 5G technology will provide 10 times the speed of current 4G. It will also feature up to a threefold increase in spectrum efficiency.

With 1.16 billion users, India is the world’s second-largest telecommunications market. The introduction of 5G will not only increase its broadband efficiency, but will also elevate it to the level of China, its main competitor.
